SmugMug Review
SmugMug is a very popular online photo-sharing service that provides features that other services do not. The service strives to make it easy for you to share your digital photos over the Internet with your friends and family. You have to pay for the service, 39.95 a year, for the ’standard’ level of service. Sure there are free sites like Flickr out there, but your viewers have to put up with advertisements, and a not as nice interface. Setting up a SmugMug account is as simple as can be, and when it comes to uploading your photos SmugMug offers the easiest to use of any online photo service. Uploading your photos can be as simple as dragging and dropping, and while your photos upload, you are shown the progress of each file, and the total upload time remaining. Such an informative and user-friendly upload tool sets SmugMug well above its competitors. Other alternatives are stand alone applications for various operating systems, and even a plugin for Apple’s iPhoto. There are various ways of customizing your galleries, including a variety of presentation styles built-in to SmugMug that allow you and your viewers to display your photos in a number of different layouts; journal styled, all thumbnails, filmstrip, and slide-show views are available, among others. Additionally the owner of the gallery can specify background colors or even themes such as holiday, sports, seasons, or graduated colors. SmugMug also allows you to edit, crop, rotate, and apply effects directly to your online photos. If you upgrade account levels you can even create your own themes (if you know HTML & CSS), upload videos, watermark your pics, and even remove the SmugMug logo and replace it with yours. SmugMug allows you to password protect various galleries if you so wish. It also allows you to choose if search engines like Google will be able to find your photos, If other SmugMug members can search for them, or if they are externally linkable, like to a blog or eBay. There are a few shortcomings, unless you are proficient in web design it is difficult to create your own themes, and although there are some tools to mass edit your photos, they could really be enhanced (Note to SmugMug: Please give us a way to mass add/delete tags across ALL galleries). Overall SmugMug is one of, if not the, best online digital photo sharing service available. If you are interested in using their service, I can get you five dollars off by using coupon code zUHZEirkZ6UDQ in the ‘Referred by’ field on the signup form. I have been very happy as a member and hope you, if you join, are too. |
